The Western Cavaliers stunned the MATC-Madison Wolfpack Saturday afternoon at the Viterbo Baseball Complex beating them 5-2. MATC would comeback to earn a split winning the second game 17-0.
In the first game the Cavs got another strong pitching performance from Ricky Bates. Bates pitched all 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 8 and walking 8. Offensively the Cavs came out swinging and took control of the game in the first inning on a solo homerun by Corey Jessesky. The Cavs would take advantage of a couple walks and an error to score 2 more runs in the 2nd inning. The Cavs tacked on 2 more runs in the 5th to extend the lead. Offensively the Cavs were led by Corey Jessesky, who had a homerun, and Nick Schultz, who was 2-2 with 2 RBI.
In the second game the Cavaliers could do very little offensively against MATC's pitcher Nick Rice. Rice would go onto stikeout 11 batters to earn the complete game victory 17-0. The Cavs sent 3 pitchers to the mound, but walks and error contributed to the lop-sided victory.
NOTES: The win versus MATC-Madison was MATC first lose in conference in 3 years. It was the first time that Western has beaten MATC in close to 20 years. With the win the Cavs improved to 8-5 on the season.
